We’re Recruiters. Here’s the Biggest Tell You Used ChatGPT on Your Job Application

With the rise of AI-powered writing tools, crafting a job application has never been faster. ChatGPT, for example, can create impressive resumes and cover letters within minutes. But be aware: recruiters can usually tell when your application has been AI-generated. According to Bonnie Dilber, a recruiting manager at Zapier, roughly 25% of job applications appear to be written by AI, and the signs are often glaringly obvious. Here, we’ll uncover the biggest clues that give away ChatGPT usage and provide insights into how you can avoid these pitfalls.
1. Robotic, Formulaic Responses
The most glaring sign of AI use is when applications come across as overly structured and templated. Imagine a recruiter reading the same “Company’s mission resonates with me and aligns with my experience” statement multiple times. Repetition of phrasing like this makes it clear that candidates are using AI, and it leaves recruiters feeling that applicants haven’t put genuine effort into their responses.
For example, Dilber noted that many applicants answer a prompt about Zapier’s product with identical language, using the same case studies, like describing a flower shop automation setup. Once or twice might pass unnoticed, but seeing the same language repeatedly signals a templated approach rather than genuine interest in the company’s products.
2. Overused Buzzwords and Lack of Personalization
AI tools are often programmed to suggest common keywords and generic terms. As a result, words like "adept," "tech-savvy," and "cutting-edge" have become increasingly common in resumes, especially for tech roles. Gabrielle Woody, a university recruiter for Intuit, finds these terms a red flag. “Intern and entry-level candidates rarely used these words before ChatGPT,” she explains, underscoring how AI-generated content doesn’t reflect authentic communication.
Even worse, many applications include vague claims without personal examples to back them up. Laurie Chamberlin, head of LHH Recruitment Solutions, points out that simply stating you’re a “team player” without examples leaves recruiters questioning your experience. Applications should include specific accomplishments and skills that only you can share—elements an AI can’t create.
3. Copy-Paste Errors and Obvious Oversights
ChatGPT often provides placeholder phrases, like “insert numbers here,” that users need to customize. When candidates skip this final editing step, it’s a dead giveaway that AI was used—and that attention to detail was lacking. Recruiter Tejal Wagadia recalls seeing applications with phrases like “add numbers here” left in the text. “If you miss this level of detail, it signals carelessness,” Wagadia says, which isn’t the impression you want to make.
These oversights tell recruiters that while you’re tech-savvy enough to use AI, you may not be detail-oriented or thorough—qualities that matter in most roles.
How Recruiters Feel About AI in Job Applications Overall
AI can be a helpful tool in your job search, but it’s best used as a starting point, not the final version. Woody suggests using ChatGPT to analyze job descriptions or help identify the relevant skills needed for a role. However, when it comes to crafting your final application, AI-generated content should be carefully edited and infused with your unique experiences.
How to Avoid Common AI Pitfalls in Your Job Application
Personalize and Edit: Start with an AI-generated draft if needed, but make sure to edit thoroughly and add personal examples. Show specific achievements and tie them to the job’s requirements.
Use AI for Research, Not Content: AI tools are excellent for breaking down job descriptions or highlighting keywords, but keep the actual writing personal.
Proofread Carefully: Don’t let placeholder phrases or generic language slip through. Review your application with a fine-tooth comb to ensure every word represents you accurately.
AI can be an asset in your job search if used thoughtfully, but blending AI-generated content with personal insights is essential for standing out. When used correctly, AI can enhance your applications without compromising authenticity. As recruiters, we recommend making your applications both genuine and detail-rich. It’s the unique touch that will set you apart in a competitive job market.
